How long does hardwood floor refinishing take?

For a typical Lake Norman home with 500–1,000 square feet of hardwood, the full refinishing process takes 5–7 business days from start to finish. Larger projects or floors requiring repairs may take 7–10 business days or longer. We communicate clearly about your timeline so you can plan around the project.

Is dust a problem during refinishing?

Not with us. We use dust containment on every job, so you don't need to cover furniture or remove items from every shelf. Your home stays cleaner during and after the project, with better air quality for your family and pets.

Question 4

Do I need to move my furniture out first?

Accepted Answer

Yes, rooms need to be cleared of furniture before we arrive. If needed, we can seal off doorways with plastic to help contain any residual dust in the rest of your home.

Question 5

How soon can I walk on my floors or move furniture back?

Accepted Answer

Light foot traffic is fine 24 hours after the final coat, and sock traffic for 48 hours. Furniture move-back is 48–72 hours. Area rugs can go back down in 3–5 days depending on the finish used.

What finish do you use?

Accepted Answer

We use Bona waterborne sealers, followed by either a one-component Bona Mega One or a two-component commercial-grade Bona Traffic HD waterborne urethane. Both dry clear, preserve the natural color of the wood, and are lower in VOCs than oil-based alternatives — a better choice for households with kids, pets, or sensitivities to fumes. If you're looking for that rich, natural, matte appearance, we also offer Bona Craft Oil 2K. It enhances the natural grain and character of the wood while maintaining a very natural, untreated-looking appearance — just with much more depth and richness.

Can my floors be refinished, or do they need to be replaced?

If your boards are structurally sound — no rot, no severe warping, not too thin from previous sandings — refinishing brings new life to your floors at a fraction of the cost of replacement. Most solid hardwood floors can be refinished multiple times over their lifetime. Engineered hardwood can typically be refinished once or twice, depending on the thickness of the wear layer.

How do I know if my floors need refinishing?

Common signs are a dull or worn-looking finish, visible scratches, gray or discolored patches, gaps that catch dust, or a finish that no longer beads water. If it's been several years since your last refinish, a free in-person assessment is the best way to know for sure.

Can you fix pet stains or deep scratches?

Accepted Answer

It depends on the depth. Pet stains that have penetrated the wood, deep gouges, or boards that need replacement will affect the scope of the project — we'll flag this during your free in-person estimate and explain your options.
